Montreal stands on the Island of Montreal. The city has the highest population in Quebec and the second highest population in Canada. The main language spoken in Montreal is French and many of the buildings have a French influence.
Historically the commercial capital of Canada it still remains an important centre of commerce, aerospace, finance, pharmaceuticals, technology, design, education, culture, tourism, gaming, film and world affairs. Its is the headquarters of the International Civil Aviation Organization.
Named a UNESCO City of Design in 2009. the European settlers called it Ville Marie, or “City of Mary.” The name Montreal comes from Mount Royal, the triple-peaked hill in the heart of the city, dominated my Saint Joseph Oratory which was completed in 1967.
As you climb the many steps up this spectacular structure look to your left for the gardens and follow –
“The Way of the Cross” pathway through the beautiful gardens, passing the many descriptive sculptures tell the story of the crucifixion.
